Bridge Smejkalka, Motorway D1

Design

The deck of the twin bridge of the total length of 246.70 m is supported by arches of the span of 122.70 m. The bridge that was built during the Second World War started to be used twenty-five years later, when the first motorway’s sections were completed. At present the bridge needs to be widened. Investigations has proved that the arch is in a very good condition but the deck has to be replaced.
To guarantee that the arches are stressed by the same forces a light steel-concrete composite decks are used. To eliminate additional torsion and transverse bending of the arches, the decks of the twin bridge are mutually connected and are supported by bearings situated only in the longitudinal arch axis.
